Par hocopolitso - Former Irish Times columnist Nuala O'Faolain talks of her memoir Are You Somebody? The Accidental Memoirs of a Dublin Woman, and her novel, My Dream of You, in this edition of HoCoPoLitSo's The Writing Life. O'Faolain, who died of cancer in 2008, speaks with poet and musician Terence Winch in 2002 about her narrative strategy, her characters, and the "sheer misery" of writing her first novel. O'Faolain reads two portions of My Dream of You, a portion about Jimmy and Kathleen in an Irish pub, and a description of the Irish sea. She also talks about her character being an outsider. The Irish have given her hell, O'Faolain said, "We're supposed to pretend that the English love us."
